the menihof farm

North of Bolzano, the Tschögglberg rises with its open meadows, light larch groves and quiet spruce forests. A mountain ridge known for its expansive views of the Dolomites and a sense of calm that is increasingly rare.
Above the small village of Afing near Jenesien, at an altitude of 1,250 metres, lies the Menihof.

Nestled in the forest and in complete seclusion, the Menihof is a retreat for couples and conscious travellers in search of silence, space and quality. The architecture of the farmstead combines the substance of the historic barn with clean lines, natural materials and a timeless design. Reduction instead of excess, atmosphere instead of staging.

Large windows open up views of the surrounding landscape; the interiors are calm, thoughtfully designed and focused on what truly matters. A place to arrive, slow down and leave everyday life behind – whether for shared days as a couple, for meaningful conversations, for rest, or simply for the pleasure of doing nothing.

We look forward to welcoming you to this special place.

The farm

Self-sufficient living beneath spruces

Cool spring water gushes from the farm's own water source, a large rainwater tank collects water for flushing and the irrigation of gardens, flowerbeds, and fields. With the installation of a photovoltaic system and a wood chip plant, which is mainly fed with wood chips from surrounding forests, the Menihof farm has become a self-sufficient enclave in the middle of a spruce forest. The sun and woods, the earth and springs, provide us and our holiday apartments in the historic barn with everything we need for a good life. Come and experience the tranquil life in harmony with nature and its wealth!

The hosts

Your hosts

At the end of 2016, a long-held dream came true for us – Stefanie and Markus. After an extensive search, we discovered the Menihof, a historic farmstead at 1,250 metres above sea level, surrounded by open meadows, Dolomite panoramas, and absolute quiet. It was a place that immediately felt special – timeless, authentic, and full of potential.

From late 2018, we lived on the farm with our two daughters, embracing the daily rhythm of mountain life. A mountain farm is both a gift and a commitment: the work never ends, but it brings immense joy. Evenings were spent around the campfire, in good company, or quietly dreaming of the next project.

Since summer 2024, we have been based in Bolzano. In the same year, we had to pause guest rentals due to unforeseen circumstances – a moment that gave us space to reflect, refine our vision, and gather fresh energy.

With 2026, a new chapter begins at Menihof. The farm is reopening for guests with a refined concept: a retreat for adults and couples seeking tranquility, autonomy, and mindful connection. We will no longer be present on the farm every day, but we remain dedicated to welcoming our guests, offering personal recommendations for hikes, excursions, and local restaurants, and sharing a warm conversation in our farm café.

The Menihof blends history with design: the renovated barn preserves its authentic character while featuring clean lines, natural materials, and thoughtful, timeless interiors. Large windows frame the surrounding landscape, inviting the outdoors in, and the spaces are crafted for calm, reflection, and comfort. It is a place to slow down, reconnect, and experience the pleasure of doing nothing – together.

We look forward to welcoming you to this special place – a retreat that is quieter, freer, and more intentional.

Yesterday & today

The history of the Menihof farm

The documented history of Menihof begins with the engraved date 1903 on the former barn, although the farmstead itself likely dates back to around 1800.

Until the 1990s, the Mair siblings lived year-round and largely self-sufficiently at Menihof – without a proper access road. A field with grain and potatoes, a vegetable garden, cows and sheep, and their own water source provided everything needed for life – a simple, hard-working existence, deeply connected to nature.

In 2016, the paths of the then-owner and Markus crossed – a fortunate encounter that marked the beginning of a new chapter. It quickly became clear what a special place this was. With great respect for the farmstead’s history and a lot of idealism, the current owners ensured that the long-planned access road was finally built. At the end of 2016, the construction of the new residence and the careful renovation of the old barn began simultaneously.

The former agricultural building was transformed into three holiday apartments – a retreat for people seeking peace, nature, and open space. After a period of pause and reflection, Menihof will reopen to guests in 2026 with a refreshed concept that preserves the character of the place while offering space for slowing down, autonomy, and conscious retreats.

Today, Menihof remains a place in transition: rooted in its history, open to new paths, and carried by the unique stillness above Afing near Jenesien.
